Electromagnetic pulse or coronal mass discharge

OVERVIEW

• Greatest Immediate Impact: The destruction or interruption of the national power grid; Airborne "fly-by-wire" aircraft (those with no cable actuated backup controls/manual reversion) would immediately be unflyable.
• Secondary Immediate Impact: Possible radioactive fallout; direct nuclear ground damage; persons on life support would die; automobile accidents; & aircraft crash damage to persons on the ground.
• Cause: The result of an EMP/HEMP, or CME. 
• Terms: EMP - ElectroMagnetic Pulse.  HEMP - High Altitude ElectroMagnetic Pulse. CME - Coronal Mass Ejection.  
• Definitions: EMP/HEMP are caused by a nuclear detonation at high altitude (an act of war). Depending on the altitude the EMP is detonated - that event could be survivable to people on the ground with very little radioactive fall out. A CME is a Coronal Mass Ejection (discharge) and is a natural phenomenon caused by the sun (think massive "solar flare").  The CME is generally not life threatening.  The largest concern is the effect on the national supply chain.  Everything about our supply chain for products, medicine, and food is electronically based and would STOP.  Immediate medical issues would kill all people already on life support; followed by people requiring refrigerated medicine; then starvation for the rest who didn't have access to appropriate stocks of food or water.
